How To Extend Your iPhone XR Battery Life With 10 Simple Phone Hacks!

There’s nothing worse than getting caught out by a flat cell phone battery. Although Apple’s newer phones have more juice than their predecessors, our iPhone’s battery life is still just not cutting it. We’ve compiled the best phone hacks for preserving your iPhone XR battery life, so get ready and take note – here’s how to fix your battery woes!

low power mode

Low Power Mode

It’s a no-brainer, really. Turning on Low Power Mode will help your iPhone’s battery life massively. This handy setting turns on when your phone hits 20% or less. You can simply go into Settings > Battery and move the toggle to switch to turn Low Power Mode on; however, you can only enable Low Power Mode if your battery is below 80%. Low Power Mode will keep your smartphone battery from dying as it enables your phone to only perform the most essential tasks, so things like background activities and mail fetching are disabled. Turning on Low Power Mode will also lower your screen brightness and activate sleep mode on your phone quicker.

hey siri

Hey Siri

The Hey Siri feature has been the source of much debate, as having it switched on gives your phone permission to constantly listen out for you to so say the magic words “Hey Siri”. When Low Power Mode is enabled, one of the first things it does is disable the Hey Siri function, so we can assume that Siri isn’t helping our battery life out. If you want to save your cell phone battery but don’t want to switch on Low Power Mode, here’s how to switch your iPhone’s assistant off. Go to Settings > Siri & Search and make sure Hey Siri is switched off.

Having your screen flash on every time you get a notification or alert is extremely power-consuming. To save your iPhone’s battery life, and your sanity, try turning off your notifications. You can choose to silence notifications from specific apps or turn them off entirely, it’s your choice. To turn off all notifications, go to Settings > Notifications and there you will be able to turn off or customise your notifications. This genius phone hack will give your device some extra juice to keep you going!

Bluetooth, Airdrop, And Wi-Fi

Bluetooth, Airdrop and Wi-Fi are constantly looking to connect to nearby devices, so can cost your iPhone’s battery life a fair amount of power. Unless it’s an absolute must, it will help in the long-run to turn these off. Even if you can’t turn off all of these, just turning off one could help your smartphone battery last longer during the day. To turn off Airdrop, go to Settings > General > Airdrop > Receiving off. In some cases, it’s important to keep your Wi-Fi on so you use less of your phone’s data, but there’s no real need to have Bluetooth and Airdrop on. To turn off your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, simply swipe down from the top right corner of your screen (or swipe up from the bottom of your screen if you have iPhone 8 or older) and tap the icons to switch off.

background app refresh

Background App Refresh

You’d think that once you close an app, that would be the end, right? Wrong. When you close an iOS app, it will keep on running in the background in a sort of suspended state. Apps that are in this suspended state are still fully able to look for updates and content, draining your iPhone XR battery life in the process. To make sure this pesky battery-wasting setting is turned off, go into Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You can choose to disable background app refresh completely, have it run only when connected to Wi-Fi, or can customise it based on each app you have. Turning this off won’t affect how your apps work, but you might experience a little delay when while your opened app retrieves any new information like new emails, posts or notifications.

This battery-saving phone hack is quite obscure; you wouldn’t think to turn your vibrate off to save your iPhone’s battery, but it really does help! Having your phone buzzing every time you get a message or notification is a quick way of draining your phone of life. So, how do you turn your vibrate off? Go into Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn both of your vibrate options off. Turning your phone onto silent without enabling the vibrate will be much more forgiving on your iPhone. If you can’t bear to go without your phone notifying you in some way of your messages, there are plenty of jingles you can choose.

location services

Location Services

This is a great option if you don’t need location services running in the background sucking up your iPhone’s battery life. While helpful when using apps like Google Maps, those GPS pings can really affect your cell phone battery. To turn off your location services, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. If you don’t want to turn off your location services, there is another more convenient phone hack instead! Rather than turning off all location services, you can change each apps location data; this means you can choose which of your apps deserve to always see your location, to never see your location or to only see your location while you’re using the app. Turning all your apps location data to ‘while using the app’ will make sure your iPhone’s battery life isn’t wasting away in your pocket!

There are a few people out there that don’t understand or even know if their iCloud is on, so it’s fair to say some don’t know how to turn it off either. iCloud uses a fair bit of data and power, so turning off this storage software could make that last bit of juice last longer. Tap Settings > your Apple ID > iCloud and turn everything off you don’t need. Turning off all of iCloud would help massively, but if you don’t want to take the risk of losing valuable pictures and other data, you can turn off anything you don’t need to be synced via iCloud. Turning off Calendars, Notes, and Safari are just a few easy ways of saving a bit more of your cell phone battery.
