Rio De Janeiro
One of the best places to celebrate the New Year is Rio de Janeiro. To some, the idea of celebrating New Year on a beach is a completely alien thought. If you fit into this category, you might be interested in Rio de Janeiro’s New Year celebrations. You’ll have to start New Year’s Eve early by heading down to Copacabana beach in the morning to get a good spot. If crowds aren’t your thing, there are plenty of restaurants that offer roof terrace tickets on the beachfront. Copacabana beach welcomes several stages where different acts come to perform in the lead up to the New Year countdown. The fireworks are set off from boats anchored in the sea and give spectacular views. If you’re planning to visit Rio for their New Year’s Eve beach party, make sure you wear white; this Bahian tradition is meant to give good luck and pays tribute to the Afro-Brazilian sea goddess Lemanjã.
Along with celebrating the Chinese New Year, Hong Kong goes all out on the 31st of December, landing them a place on our list as one of the best places to celebrate the New Year. Not only can you experience the stunning pyrotechnics and beautifully choreographed fireworks, but you can also experience a whole new culture! Skyscrapers and highrises send out bursts of shimmer at 15-minute intervals starting from 11pm, to imitate shooting stars. The Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and Victoria Harbour are two of the main locations ideal for watching the midnight show, or you could book a cruise and enjoy the fireworks on the Victoria Harbour waters! If you’re after more than just a fireworks display, Hong Kong hosts a new year’s eve parade at 10pm, and there are plenty of shows and parties on the Promenade!
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
No stranger to New Year celebrations, Dubai knows how to start the year right! Fireworks shoot out from the Burj Khalifa while the Dubai Fountain performs a spectacular water-music dance, all on the stroke of midnight. Although Dubai’s fireworks display is truly mesmerising, it’s hardly the main event. Afterparties are hosted all over the city and carry on late into the early morning of New Year’s Day. This year, Drai’s Dubai nightclub has drafted in American rapper, Nelly, to headline the New Year’s Eve party. For the romantics, why not welcome the New Year on a Dhow Dinner Cruise? Experience the beautiful pyrotechnics and New Year countdown while on a dhow in the middle of the Creek. Cruises typically last for three hours and offer champagne, live entertainment, and a multi-course buffet. Whatever you’re into, you can’t deny that Dubai is one of the best places to celebrate the New Year!
Another beach location on our list is Sydney, Australia. We suggest you book a hotel that hosts private New Year events, so you’ll have something fun to do once the firework display and New Year countdown is over. If you’d rather save your pennies, there are a few free areas that offer great views; you can view maps of all the locations and the best vantage spots on Sydney’s New Year’s Eve website. The night starts with a beautiful water display from the local fire tugs, leading into a Welcome to Country performance by Sydney’s traditional indigenous custodians. Sydney also hosts two New Year firework displays during the evening; Many families attend the 9pm display so their young children can celebrate the New Year. The biggest firework show is the midnight display, where fireworks will be set off to shoot through the sky from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, and the barges on the water. If you don’t want the fun to stop after the stroke of midnight, there are plenty of after-parties, clubs, and even boat parties, for you to enjoy!
If you’re thinking of entering the new year in the UK, there’s no other place to be than London. England’s capital city is known as the best place to celebrate the New Year in all of the UK! You can enjoy the New Year celebrations in typical British style, sat in a pub! Many pubs are open on NYE, so you can enjoy a pint and join in on the New Year countdown. If you’re looking for something fancier, or you want a pub atmosphere but you still want to enjoy the firework display, grab a table at one of the few rooftop bars London has to offer. Even though London hoasts many New Year events, it doesn’t stop the city from running like usual; you can pop down to the West End and experience a show. Don’t let the fun stop after the New Year countdown, though! On the 1st of January, London organises a New Year’s Day parade. The parade starts at 12 noon, where you can see marching bands, acrobats, and gigantic balloons and floats!
