treadmill vs outdoor running

I’ve been hitting the treadmill pretty hard these past few months (thanks to the couch to 5k challenge) but since the weather here up North was pretty nice over the weekend, I tried to do my usual run outdoors… it left me deflated to say the least!

I’m used to running for 25 minutes straight on the treadmill, no incline and at a steady 8.0 pace. I managed 8 minutes before I had to stop on my outdoor run!😫

Is this normal, or did I just have a really bad day?

I also found this out the hard way and it’s very disheartening so I feel you.

I think the ground surface makes a huge difference, as well as outdoor elements like weather and gradients – you’re in a perfect environment on the treadmill really and can make sure you’re staying at a set pace on a set gradient. With outdoor running, you can’t turn on the AC or make sure your gradient is flat and you also can’t tell at what pace you’re running at, so you might actually be running faster than usual which could be tiring you out earlier than usual?

If you want to eventually run outdoors then I would recommend just running outside or at least using your outdoor run stats rather than your treadmill stats. If you just want to run, stick to the treadmill and don’t pay much notice to the outdoor run stats!
